2009-2010 EDIT traineeships

The Expert-in-Training programme: Details

EDIT provides a limited number of short-term traineeships for graduate students and early career researchers working in the field of taxonomy. The main objective is to acquire and to strengthen taxonomic research skills through an on-the-job training. The typical duration of the traineeship will be one week to one month depending on the training subject.

Modalities of the programme

The traineeships are offered:

  • to trainees working or studying at an EDIT partner institution or at a European university / research institute,
  • for training in an EDIT partner institution different from the applicant’s EDIT institution or a European university / research institution different from the applicant’s institution.

The trainee will join a project team and will be coached by an expert (mentor) who will instruct her/him on ‘how to do the job’. The training will include by lectures given by the mentor to the trainee. Any necessary travel visas and medical insurance are the personal responsibility of the participant.

Grant benefits EDIT is able to cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and provide a per diem to contribute towards living costs and training-related costs (unless specified otherwise in the training description).

Eligibility EDIT traineeships are open to students and early career researchers who are studying or working at an EDIT institution or a European University / research institute as a Masters student, PhD student or researcher. Traineeships are offered for training in an institution different from their own institution. Applicants should preferably hold at least a first cycle degree in an appropriate discipline and be strongly motivated to undertake training in taxonomy.

Application process Calls for applications will be launched periodically on the EDIT website. Applications must include the following documents as e-mail attachments:

• the application form (click here);

• a letter of recommendation in an e-mail received directly from your two referees. Applications should be sent by email to Isa.Vandevelde@naturalsciences.be (EDIT WorkPackage 8 - Training and Public Awareness).

Applicants should note that applications that are either incomplete or late will not be accepted. The deadline for the current round of applications was the 15 of August 2009.

Selection procedure The applications will be evaluated by the EDIT Selection Committee. The main selection criteria used to assess applicants will be their scientific merit, their motivation and usefulness of the training for his/her career.

Notification Applicants will be notified upon receipt of their application by e-mail. Applicants will be notified after the evaluation of their proposal whether they have been accepted or not (maximum 4-8 weeks after the call deadline). Successful applicants must notify the committee of their acceptance or refusal within 15 days of their notification. Successful applicants will be posted on the EDIT website.

Report and certificate Trainees will complete an evaluation form within two weeks after the end of the traineeship and send this form by e-mail to EDIT. Trainees who have completed the traineeship will receive, after their training period, a certificate specifying the dates of their training period, specification of the training and the institution where they received the training.
