Advanced Biosystematics, Phylogenetics and Biogeography (Leiden)

 Description of project: 

A training including lectures, computer practicals, literature study and discussion on analytical tools such as data & treebuilding, network reconstruction, parsimony- and model-based phylogenetic reconstruction, tree interpretation, character optimization, super/species trees and orthology/paralogy analysis, molecular evolution, biodiversity assessment, biogeographic analysis, data mining, species distribution modelling, spatial patterns and global change.

for trainees at PhD or Postdoc level Individual training based on face-to-face and group discussions and self-activation in practicals
Practical experiences: 
- Application of various computer programmes and their options - Interpreting the resulting phylogenetic trees and biogeographic hypotheses - data mining and modelling
Lectures: 
- Parsimony - Tree statistics, Maximum likelihood and Bayesian analyses - Supertree methods - Species and homology hypotheses - Principles of biogeography - Methods for historical biogeographic analysis - Species distribution modelling - Relevance of spatial pattern analysis
