Web-based taxonomy and biodiversity information management
Organising institution(s)/organisation(s): University of Amsterdam, ETI BioInformatics
Host organisation(s)/institution(s), if different from organiser: ETI BioInformatics University of Amsterdam Mauritskade 61 1092 AD Amsterdam Netherlands Phone: +31 20 5257239 Fax: +31 20 5257238 Web: www.eti.uva.nl
Language: English/Dutch
Content: The course focuses on web-based taxonomy, biodiversity information processing, electronic data sharing, and interoperability in the context of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) in support of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). In addition to overview lectures there are presentations of practical use cases, and a hands-on session using an information management tool to create taxonomic and biodiversity information systems. The exercise encompasses building taxonomic (multimedia) databases, computer-aided-identification systems, and an interactive geographic information system. Glossaries, literature reference, methodology data are integrated in the system. The software for web-based-taxonomy supports GBIF SpeciesBanks and is used for treating plants, animals and fungi. This course encompasses: - Overview of recent bio-informatics developments with respect to biodiversity data management innovations (e.g. EU-EDIT, Species2000 and Catalogue of Life, GBIF); collection and observation databases; 3D imaging for types - Practical introduction to interoperability principles; DiGIR, BioCASE, TAPIR protocols; EBCD, Darwin Core, SPICE, SpeciesPage schemas; demonstration cases and web portals - Work program and function of the National GBIF Node (NLBIF) web portal - Information management, web-based taxonomy, and SpeciesBank systems - Hands-on training session in digitizing data, applying data standards, creating multimedia taxonomic databases, assembling computer aided keys and interactive geographic information systems. Includes 3D imaging. The courses take place in ETI's MultiMediaLab where the trainees have access to multimedia computer workstations, fast Internet connectivity, and guidance of specialist
