Title: Entomology

Organising institution(s)/organisation(s): University of Copenhagen
Host organisation(s)/institution(s), if different from organiser:
Language: Danish/English (if just one non-Scandinavian student attends)
Content: Introduction & generalities about arthropods. What is systematic/evolutionary entomology about? An outline of arthropod structure and diversity. The tools of the trade. HEXAPODA, general morphology: integument &   associated structures, head & thor. How the machinery of the hexapod body ticks: sensing, feeding and moving HEXAPODA, general morphology: abdomen and internal organ. How the machinery of the hexapod body ticks: fuelling and reproducing. SPRINGTAILS, SILVERFISH etc. (apterygote hexapods). Evolution of structural and life-history traits associated with being a ‘soil arthropod’. Pterygota, generalities; MAYFLIES (Ephemeroptera), DRAGONFLIES (Odonata). The development of wings and its far-reaching evolutionary consequences. Divergent habitat invasion of immatures and adults. Hexapods adapting to the aquatic environment. Fossil evidence on early evolution of winged insects ‘Lower Neoptera’: STONEFLIES (Plecoptera), GRASHOPPERS (Orthoptera), STICK INSECTS (Phasmatode, MANTIDS-COCKROACHES-TERMITES, (Dictyoptera s.lat. Diversification of insect terrestrial life-styles. Evolution of the first major lineages of insect herbivores, of the first major lineages with diverse sound signalling – and of the first eusocial lineage. Small orders of lower Neoptera: WEBSPINNERS (Embioptera), EARWIGS (Dermaptera), Grylloblattode Mantophasmatodea, Zoraptera; Paraneoptera: generes and PSOCIDS/LICE (Psocodea), THRIPS (Thysanoptera). A multitude of evolutionary pathways that led to only limited species diversification – including the evolution of intimate hexapod associations with warm-blooded vertebrates. PLANT LICE, LEAFHOPPERS, TRUE BUGS etc. (Hemiptera). The first insect lineage we encounter that approaches being ‘mega-diverse’ in terms of species numbers, and surely is so in terms of life-styles and reproduction strategies - which range from ‘normal’ to bizarre. Endopterygota, generalities. Strepsiptera, LACE WINGS, SNAKE FLIES etc (Neuropterida). Mecopterida, generalities and SCORPION FLIES (Mecoptera), FLEAS (Siphonaptera). ‘Complete metamorphosis’, its meaning and consequences. Insect lineages with this developmental mode but with modest or small species numbers. WASPS (Hymenoptera). The evolution and diversification of the most successful parasitoid lineage among insects. Evolution of eusociality and its possible genetic background. BEETLES (Coleoptera). The group of living organisms for which the Creator allegedly had “an inordinate fondness”. What promoted their success? And are the numbers behind the anecdote at all meaningful? CADDISFLIES (Trichoptera), MOTHS & BUTTERFLIES (Lepidoptera). The best corroborated ‘sister-group’ relation between two insect ‘orders’ – and two contrasting diversification modes. Evolution of the largest lineage of herbivorous animals. Moths and bats: a predator-prey 'arms race'. FLIES (Diptera). The 'maggot miracle' and the ecologically most diverse of the insect ‘orders’. CENTIPEDES, MILLIPEDES etc (Myriapoda). From six to 750 legs – development and locomotion. Chemical defense. SCORPIONS (Scorpiones), HARVESTMEN (Opiliones), HOODED TICKSPIDERS (Ricinulei), PSEUDOSCORPIONS (Pseudoscorpiones), SUN SPIDERS (Solifugae), MICRO WHIPSCORPIONS (Palpigradi), TAILLESS WHIPSCORPIONS (Amblypygi), WHIPSCORPIONS (Uropygi). The minor arachnid orders – including representatives that are bizarre, deadly and with highly developed parental care. SPIDERS (Araneae). Megadiverse group of organisms with a complete dependence on predation as a trophic strategy. MITES & TICKS (Acari). Mites are the ‘go anywhere, do anything’ arachnids that occur on every continent, including Antarctica, and in freshwater as well as marine systems. Demonstration of Entomological collections of the Zoological Museum.

Title: Pollen
Organising institution(s)/organisation(s): Universiteit Leiden
Host organisation(s)/institution(s), if different from organiser:
Language: English
Content: This course of lectures, demonstrations and practicals gives an introduction into the study of pollen morphology and some of its applications. In the first week attention is paid to structural diversity, functional and evolutionary aspects, and the identification of pollen types. Different aperture systems and wall structures will be examined with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The acquired knowledge is applied in the second week in identifying and counting pollen grains in soil samples from an archaeological context. The results are used to construct pollen diagrams, which should be interpreted in view of the observed changes in the vegetation in the area and its surroundings due to climate changes and human activities.

The course will thereby allow students to appreciate not only the botany of cultivated plants, their structure, evolution, and systematics, but also the relevance of these studies to the economies of both temperate and tropical countries. Specific topics include e.g. origins of agriculture, food and other economic crops arranged to commodity groups (like roots, cereals, pulses, fruits, beverages, oils & fats, timbers & firewood crops, fibres & latex, pharmaceuticals, herbs & spices, and ornamentals. In the second week comprises a literature study in couples on a chosen objective, the results of which are orally presented on the last day and in a written assignment afterwards.

Title: Seminar biodiversity
Organising institution(s)/organisation(s): Universiteit Leiden
Host organisation(s)/institution(s), if different from organiser:
Language: English

Content: The seminar provides insight in the scientific debate about the definition and interpretation of the concept, in the state of the art in biodiversity research and in the application of the concept in actual policy making and management. A broad spectrum of aspects of biodiversity is discussed. The biodiversity of the world is believed to decrease at such a speed that one speaks of a “biodiversity crisis”. By ratifying the Convention of Biological Diversity (UNEP, 1992), many governments have agreed to “develop national strategies, plans or programmes for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity”. But what exactly is ‘biodiversity’? And what do we know about it? How important is it and for whom? Is it possible to set attainable goals for biodiversity? When should these goals be reached? How should priorities be set? Can existing policy, of the Netherlands as well as of international institutions, be considered as ‘biodiversity friendly’? These and related questions will be discussed based on both scientific papers and policy documents.
