Content: This course of lectures, demonstrations and practicals gives an introduction into the study of pollen morphology and some of its applications. In the first week attention is paid to structural diversity, functional and evolutionary aspects, and the identification of pollen types. Different aperture systems and wall structures will be examined with light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The acquired knowledge is applied in the second week in identifying and counting pollen grains in soil samples from an archaeological context. The results are used to construct pollen diagrams, which should be interpreted in view of the observed changes in the vegetation in the area and its surroundings due to climate changes and human activities.
