Training program in taxonomy of higher plants

Description of project:
This program offers a general training in classical and modern aspects of systematic, taxonomic and nomenclatural research including exercises in morphological analysis of living plants and herbarium specimens, chromosome studies, sequencing of nr and cpDNA markers, phylogenetic reconstructing from molecular sequence data, and encoding taxonomic data for computer processing in DELTA. The accompanying lecture “Biodiversity research” covers history and development of taxonomy and classification, identification and documentation.

Duration of training:
2 weeks

Training period:
7-18 November 2011

Target Audience:
For trainees at MSc (and PhD) level. Individual training based on face-to-face and self-activation in practicals.

Practical experiences:

  • Macro- and microscopical investigation (LM and SEM), character analysis and coding, preparing species descriptions
  • Counting and analysing chromosomes DNA sequencing
  • Application of various computer programmes and their options (incl. DELTA, cladistics)

Lectures:

  • History of biosystematic research (plants)
  • Principles of classification, taxonomy and phylogeny
