Tropical Plant Identification Course

Description of project: 

The course will teach c. 60 of the most commonly encountered tropical plant families and comprises of short lectures complemented by extensive hands-on practical sessions using herbarium specimens to demonstrate the key characters for each family. The course aims to: give each participant the skills to identify the common tropical plant families; give participants an understanding of the methods used in plant identification; enable participants to understand terms used in plant identification; and enable participants to appreciate and use herbaria for plant identification.

MSc students, PhD students as well as for early career researchers
Practical experiences: 
Using herbarium specimens to identify families, and to sort through incoming material as undertaken in a normal day-to-day situation in the Kew herbarium - Practical sessions follow each lecture
Lectures: 
Short lectures will give the key characters of plant families
